"Prevention instead of surgery!"

With this guiding principle dog health begins with us.

In order to prevent injuries and illnesses in a targeted manner, dogs, just like humans, require overall fitness, which requires a balanced weight, sufficient exercise and endurance, as well as strong muscles and resilient bones and joints.
This is exactly where our concept HuffysFIT comes in - it is based on the sustainable health-promoting effect of Hydro Rehab.

Who is HuffysFIT for?
HuffysFIT offers exercise training that all dogs should participate in at least from the age of 5 in order to grow old healthily. It not only promotes the health of the dog, but also contributes to the prophylaxis of injuries. Through gentle training to build muscle, joint mobilization and weight loss.
It supports sustainable and preventive according to the motto "prevention instead of surgery"!

Injuries are prevented by better musculature, painkillers can be reduced or used later, operations are avoided (cruciate ligament ruptures). Reduction of veterinary costs and delay of diseases, damages or their negative effects. Osteoarthritis is not cured, but symptoms are alleviated and delayed.

Young dogs
can also be trained. Small breeds in particular should be trained from the age of 10 months due to their breed-specific "gene backpack". For example, Chihuas or French Bulldogs should have their muscles strengthened to reduce patellar luxations (dislocation of the kneecap). This reduces the susceptibility to cruciate ligament ruptures (surgery costs between €3,000 and €5,000) in small breeds and increases the quality of life, since the patella dislocates less frequently.
The same is true for German Shepherds, which have deficiencies in the back and hindquarters and can better compensate for these deficiencies by having good back and hindquarters muscles.

All sports and service dogs, which can thus work better, longer and more efficiently.
Do I have to become a member and what are the benefits of membership?
No, you don't have to become a member and you can also pay per unit.

The membership serves to lower the unit prices and to offer you further advantages.
Through the membership your dog can train regularly and sustainably - therefore "Forever young"!

Other benefits include discounted training (starting at €10.90), the opportunity to attend classes at our Huffys Academy, discounts on certain items and insurance.

What are the benefits of hydro fitness training?
  • Reduces the risk of injury through continuous and controlled movement.
  • Uniform loading of the circulatory system and programming of the correct gait pattern in the spinal cord.
  • Gentle stretching and strengthening of joints through warm water and movement against water resistance.
  • More even gait pattern and bilateral strengthening of muscles.
  • Relief of deficits that would otherwise be compensated by another leg/joint, harmonizing the musculature of all four legs.
  • Relief of joints during exercise due to the weight-bearing capacity of the water (up to 75% of body weight).
  • Pain-free movement leads to more pleasure and longer exercise sessions, which is good for fitness, coordination, cardiovascular and immune system.
Do I always need a hydrotrainer:in on the underwater treadmill?
The Hydrofitnesstrainer:innen will first accompany you during the "HuffysFit in Motion" course so that you and your dog learn to do the exercises correctly.

Afterwards, you can continue training independently with your dog. If you feel unsure about using the underwater treadmill, you are welcome to continue booking appointments with a Hydrofitness instructor.

The idea of dog training is that after expert instruction, you can train independently with your dog.

"Learning by doing, to do it yourself!"

How can I become a Hydrotrainer:in?
HuffysFIT offers regular hydrotrainer courses in its own Huffys Academy. Here, trained animal physiotherapists, osteopaths, TFA or alternative practitioners can take their hydrotrainer or hydrofitness trainer certificate.
The courses take place in our Academy in Nidda near Frankfurt and are led by Tamara Baumbach.

Step 1:
Register at Huffys Academy for the corresponding course. If you want to participate as a dog owner, you have to plan an extra day to learn the medical basics.

Step 2: Attend the course and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. Learn how the underwater treadmill works, medical conditions and contraindications, care and maintenance of the underwater treadmill, and athletic training.

Step 3: Successfully complete the course and receive your Hydrofitness Trainer (HFT) certification. If you already have medical training, you will receive your Hydrotrainer (HT) certification.

Step 4:
If you want to work as a hydrotrainer/hydrofitness instructor, make sure you have enough hands-on experience on the underwater treadmill. If not, you may need to take additional hands-on training.

Step 5: Take continuing education courses to deepen and broaden your knowledge and skills. There are specific courses for different breeds of dogs and medical conditions.

Step 6: Keep your certification current by regularly attending continuing education courses.

Note: Exact requirements and steps may vary by course. It is important that you educate yourself on the specific requirements and prerequisites to ensure you are taking all the necessary steps to become a qualified hydro trainer/hydro fitness instructor.

It is important to us that all of our hydro trainers/hydro fitness instructors meet a minimum standard to provide the best training experience for our training teams and a safe training experience for the dogs. Animal health is especially close to our hearts.
Can groups teach HuffysFit in Motion classes independently?
We offer clubs, authorities, animal shelters, dog trainers, rescue dog teams to train their members themselves as multi-users. The prerequisite is that a member of this group has an appropriate qualification or has been trained in our academy as a hydrotrainer:in or hydrofitnesstrainer:in.
Can my dog get hurt during training?
Hydrotraining is one of the gentlest training methods available. Strains as in gambling or ligament injuries are rather rare.

Overstraining is prevented by limiting the training time to a maximum of 15 minutes for the first 20 sessions and then increasing it to a maximum of 20 minutes. If all dog owners are careful with the system, injuries are almost impossible, but not completely avoidable.
Can my dog train if he is injured?
It depends on the injury. Of course, our underwater treadmills can also be used as therapy equipment under the guidance of one of our hydrotrainer:in.(Dog therapy, hydrotherapy and animal physiotherapy.)

This can therapeutically support the healing process. Basically, it is recommended to consult an animal physiotherapist or veterinarian. We do not recommend therapy on your own.
From what age may be trained?
Our recommendation for training dogs on the underwater treadmill is that we only allow dogs on our underwater treadmills from the age of 12 months and only after a thorough examination by our hydrotrainers, who are also animal physiotherapists.

The reason for this is that the dog should have had its first hair change (at 5 months) and the cartilage in the joints should have hardened, which is usually the case at 10 months. It is important to note that dogs should not be trained on the underwater treadmill before 10 months of age to avoid possible damage to the joint cartilages.

For this reason, we recommend that your dog becomes a Huffy no earlier than 1 year of age.

How can I rent the underwater treadmill?
Free appointments can be booked via our website.
Community appointments as a club, interest group, dog school, animal shelter, authority, rescue dog team or breeder are also possible.

Register on our website to be able to book different programs. When you book an appointment, we will give you a QR code for your appointment that you can use to train during the booked time.

Which breeds should be trained for life?
Only recommendations can be given here. Basically, it is good if every dog gets exercise from the beginning to prevent injuries and signs of wear and tear.

  • Dog breeds with breed-specific deficiencies should begin training at 12 months of age. This includes bulldogs, French bulldogs, Chihuahuas and any other breeds prone to patellar luxations. The goal of training is to strengthen the patellar tendons to prevent the kneecap from popping out of alignment.
  • In German Shepherds, the back muscles and hind limbs should be strengthened.
  • In all breeds prone to hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis(e.g., Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Labradors), the stress on the joints should be reduced by good musculature.
  • Sporting dogs that work in a competitive environment (e.g., agility, Schutzdienst, or similar) can prevent or minimize injuries from jumping or slipping as a preventative measure.
  • Breeding dogs presented at dog shows look better when they are well muscled and show a more fluid gait. A more vital expression is likely to result in a better score.

What happens when you are overweight?
When a dog is overweight, it has a negative impact on its joints . They are subjected to greater stress and can cause osteoarthritis or injuries to the carpal joint . In addition, tendons and ligaments stretch, especially the joints at the paws. This can cause the dog to "kick through".

When a dog weighs more, more stress is placed on its skeleton, which also affects bones and ligaments. The dog becomes sluggish and moves less. Pain is often treated with medication.

When a dog weighs less, it is more agile and there are fewer veterinary costs. Also, fewer or weaker medications are needed. The dog stays healthy longer and ages better - similar to us humans.
Why does the HuffysFIT concept delay osteoarthritis?
When dogs have stronger muscles, they can take more pressure off their joints and potentially delay the effects of osteoarthritis or relieve pain. When dogs exercise in water, the buoyancy of the water relieves pressure on their joints, which can lead to pain-free exercise.

This training can have many benefits, such as better muscles, better joint mobility, more enjoyment of exercise, a stronger cardiovascular system, a stronger immune system, better coordination, and better stamina.

There is an overall improvement in BMI.

Huffy's BMI "Better Mobilisation Interaction".
Is it just muscular training or mental and coordination training as well?
The movement in the water is a new experience for the dogs. Since the dog must trust its owner, the relationship between dog and owner is strengthened.

Due to the different water levels, the dog has to concentrate more on his gait. This improves the coordination of the dog.

This training also enhances the dog's mental abilities, allowing it to perform its tasks longer and more accurately.
Sports fitness - what exactly is it?
Sporting fitness in dogs means that they are physically able to participate in sporting activities without injury or overwork.

Before dogs can exercise on our underwater treadmills, they must be examined by a veterinarian to ensure they meet certain health requirements. These requirements vary from breed to breed and from dog to dog, but may include the following items.

  • Healthy conformation and normal body weight
  • No signs of cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems or joint problems
  • No neurological disorders or mobility limitations
  • No signs of behavioral problems or stress that could interfere with training.

Special care should be taken with Molossian breeds such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs and similar breeds. These breeds often have a short muzzle and flat facial structure, which can lead to breathing problems and overheating. They may also be more prone to joint problems. Therefore, a veterinarian must be especially careful to determine if these dogs are suitable for training on the underwater treadmill.
