The use of water for healing and rehabilitation of animals dates back to ancient times. The ancient Greeks and Romans used seawater to treat horses and to heal injuries in military animals. In recent decades, animal hydrotherapy has been developed into an important area of animal rehabilitation and physiotherapy. However, modern hydrotherapy for dogs was introduced in the 1980s in the United Kingdom and the United States and has since spread throughout the world. Today, there are specialized hydrotherapy facilities, with underwater treadmills, whirlpools and pools, with various types of equipment to maximize the benefits of therapy.
